“It was planted with irrigation, the dry land has been very difficult. Even so, Córdoba is working hard at the sector level with the chickpea cluster and also at the company level in particular, because it is a crop that has a lot of potential. This is a circumstantial situation, the irrigation circles are going to be carried out and it will be successful: the market has very good prospects”. This is how the agricultural engineer and “specialty specialist” Bárbara Wulff summed up for Agroverdad the current context and what is to come in relation to this crop and its placement in the buying markets.
The talk was held on the occasion of a meeting with all the distributors of the firm Pemán Semillas (https://peman.com.ar/) at its headquarters in Sinsacate. “Unfortunately, this year the rains did not accompany us and we were once again in a context of low planting area. We came out of a summer with low humidity and in the fall we did not find any precipitation," he said.
But he continued with an analysis beyond the climatic circumstance: "The specialties are very good, not only in the province of Córdoba but also in the rest of the country where they are carried out, but specifically in our province it is something that has been growing from the hand of the chickpea and also of other beans or pisingallo corn, which complete the palette. Producers are increasingly encouraging themselves to carry out this type of crop and the sector is growing a lot."
Market up?
When consulted at the company level, Wulff stated that the company offers “opportunities for the commercialization of these products, and we also carry out planting on our side. The truth is that for this year the opportunities are more than interesting, it is a market that is probably on the rise and it is good to take advantage of it. With the sales it is still a bit early, the harvest is in November or December, but we are taking a position to be able to capture those prices.”
Mung, the vip bean
“The mung bean is also a very interesting crop, it was a positive year. Although yields were lower than last year, very good qualities were obtained. Increasingly, Argentina is positioning itself as an important player. We see that it has a lot of potential and as a company we are investing a lot in developing it. We are selling very successfully and the producers are satisfied with the results in the field. It is a relatively simple crop to manage and with a wide market despite being a specialty, which gives it predictability," concluded "Barbie" Wulff.
